About Design at Gusto

Design comprises over 80 creative professionals focused on empowering small businesses. The team works cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing. We are building an AI-native design organization — and we mean that seriously.

About the Role

This is a senior individual contributor position leading AI design across Gusto's platform, beginning with Gus (their conversational AI assistant) and expanding into AI-powered workflows for payroll, benefits, and HR.

The role balances strategic vision-setting with hands-on execution.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve UX vision for Gus and AI experiences across Gusto
  • Lead and ship Tier 1 AI initiatives from concept through launch
  • Design complete AI workflows addressing input, validation, risk, and failure modes
  • Partner with AI Product and Engineering leaders translating technical constraints
  • Establish scalable AI interaction patterns and design principles
  • Write and iterate on prompts collaboratively
  • Leverage AI tooling for accelerated exploration and prototyping
  • Mentor designers on AI team; coach across organization
  • Advocate for responsible AI experiences
  • Required Qualifications

    Proven AI product impact: You've shipped LLM-driven product experiences to production and can demonstrate measurable impact on adoption, efficiency, or user trust.

    Systems-level thinking: Experience designing complete workflows beyond chat interfaces, understanding failure modes, guardrails, transparency, and user control.

    Strategic product influence: You've defined UX direction at a portfolio or company level and influenced roadmap, scope, and sequencing decisions.

    Technical fluency: Comfortable collaborating with AI engineers, understanding retrieval, context management, latency, and model reliability.

    Builder mindset: You ship. You prototype. You iterate.

    Organizational leadership: Enhanced team quality through coaching and cross-functional partnerships.

    Compensation

    Cash Range:

  • Denver & most remote locations: $204,000–$238,000/year
  • San Francisco, Seattle, New York: $240,000–$280,000/year
  • Strong emphasis on equity-based compensation (company ownership).

    Work Location

    Hybrid arrangement: 2-3 days/week in office for Denver, San Francisco, NYC-based employees.
