Tolan is an Embodied Companion — a cute AI alien you talk with naturally, like a friend. The team previously founded Even, which was acquired for $300M in 2022. Leadership includes designers and founders from Instagram, Retro, Behance, Vimeo, and Notion. The company emphasizes autonomy and operates in-person in downtown San Francisco.

The Role

Tolan seeks a Principal Designer to help shape the company's future. The position involves designing, building, and shipping features that advance embodied AI interfaces.

Responsibilities

  • Own design projects end-to-end, from foundational product decisions to polished visual details
  • Partner closely with engineering and product to take features from concept to production
  • Set and maintain a high design bar across the full Tolan experience
  • Push the boundaries of what's possible at the frontier of embodied AI interfaces
  • Talk with real users, learn from what you ship, and iterate quickly

    • Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years owning design projects end-to-end with minimal oversight
  • Proven track record taking consumer-facing products from concept to production with user iteration
  • Thrive in highly autonomous and collaborative environments
  • Care equally about solving product problems and visual design
  • Know when to follow patterns and when to break them creatively
